Description: BACKGROUNDSafe and Affordable Surgery (SAS)Access to safe and affordable surgery remains limited in the Western Pacific Region despite its critical role in reducing death and disability and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage. Health care-associated infections (HAIs) are among the most common adverse events in care delivery. They affect 7% of hospitalized patients in developed and 15% in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with attributable mortality estimated at 10%.
